User guide
Your folders. Your pace.
Start with a Smart Scan, review the groups, and clean only what you choose. Everything you clean goes to the Vault first, so a cleanup can be undone.
- Allow access to your filesWhere your system asks, approve access with the system folder picker. On a Mac, OgreClean asks once for your home folder and remembers the choice so later scans can run.
- Run Smart ScanOne pass over your home folder groups what is worth cleaning: system and app files, developer files, installers in Downloads, large files, and old project dependencies. OgreClean reads file names, sizes and dates, never file contents.
- Review the labelsEvery item is Safe (rebuilt automatically by the app that made it), Review (replaceable at a cost, such as installers or package caches) or Risky (may be irreplaceable, such as your own files, device backups or files inside hidden app folders), with a one-line reason. Only Safe items are preselected. Your own files are never selected for you.
- Clean into the VaultCleaned items move to the Ogre Vault first. The result banner offers Undo, which restores the whole cleanup, and Free now for the Safe part.
- Restore or delete from the VaultOpen the Vault from the main navigation, select an item and choose Restore. Restores never overwrite a path that has been recreated since.
How the Vault works
The Vault is a recoverable holding area, not extra disk space: items stay on the same device while they are in it, so space is only freed when they are deleted.
- Safe items are deleted automatically 7 days after cleaning, or right away if you choose Free now.
- Review and Risky items are never deleted automatically. They wait in the Vault’s “Waiting for you” section until you delete them.
- Items from another drive are held in a hidden
.OgreCleanVaultfolder on that drive, so cleaning never copies data between drives.
Storage breakdown and Explorer
The storage breakdown groups space into the categories of your system’s storage settings. Explorer shows the largest folders and files of the home folder or any folder you choose; select a folder to look inside, or go up one level. Sizes are the space actually used on disk. Online-only cloud files are never listed or opened, and a scan never crosses into another volume.
Other drives and devices
USB drives, network shares and connected iPhones or iPads (through Xcode’s device file system) appear as scan locations but are scanned only when you add them. In the macOS sandbox, adding one asks for access with the folder picker.
Folders macOS protects
Folders such as Mail, Messages and the Trash show a lock until you turn on Full Disk Access in System Settings. OgreClean explains the setting and opens System Settings for you, but never requires it.
What OgreClean does not touch
Smart Scan does not clean operating-system internals, registry entries, Mail or Photos libraries, other apps’ private containers, cloud-synced folders or files outside your home folder. OgreClean does not run a resident background agent.
Always review before you clean. Labels and reasons are guidance, not a guarantee. Check any item you are unsure about, and keep your own backups of files that matter.
Activity
The Activity view keeps a local record of scans, cleanups, restores and deletions on your computer, so you can see what happened.
